What would Oberhof be without skiing?
In addition to ski jumping on the Chancellor’s Area venue and the racing toboggans and bobsled track (where the 2008 racing toboggan world championship will take place) has grown into a tourist magnet for those interested in biathlon sports.
Due to the holding of the world biathlon championship in 2004, the town built the “Rennsteig Arena,” one of the most attractive German sports venues. Every January, the Biathlon World Cup takes place here. (click for current schedule).

Oberhof is worth a special trip even when there are no sporting events taking place. The WSV (football team) Oberhof 05 offers a snuffling biathlon the whole year: in the summer for mountain bikers and cross-runners, in winter for cross-country skiers. There are group programs with relays or the arrangement of competitive shooting. Single participants who succeed with 15 shots receive 15 Euros—reservations are strongly encouraged.

Horst Köhler, Germany’s President, was a prominent participant in “Biathlon for the Common Man”: while he was on vacation in February, 2007, he took up a rifle and gave it a try.
