Oberhof... a well-known destination...
The 100-mile long high hiking trail, known as “Rennsteig,” is already well known. In order to experience a part of the Rennsteig region, you would do well to start from Oberhof. The quiet, the clean air and the landscape bring you back to the 19th century of the summer freshness of Oberhof. Measured and tested with the most modern technology, the town has been named a “government-recognised clean air region.” In addition to the quiet of the area, Oberhof also offers excitement. With the Rennsteig Garden, Oberhof offers a little jewel. Every year from the end of April to the end of October, an area of 17 acres is planted with nearly 4,000 mountain plants from around the world. From this garden has sprung the traditional blooming festival in June and the Fall Festival in September.
Sport in Oberhof—World Cup and World Championship Series
Oberhof is well-known as a place for championship sports, particularly in biathlons, ski jumping, cross-country skiing, skeleton and bobsled. Oberhof’s concentration of jumping ramps, biathlon stadium and skating courses in a small area is unique. The broadcast of the biathlon world championships in February, 2004 was a high point for the little village on the Rennsteig.
